The design for this Federal drop-leaf Pembroke table was created by Steve Latta based on a piece in the Winterthur collection.
The curved drawer fronts (one functional, one fixed) are veneered with end-matched walnut crotch veneers, cut from the part of the tree where a branch and the trunk meet, producing highly figured grain.
All of the inlays were shop-made from holly and English walnut woods. The white lines are a type of inlay called “stringing,” while the geometric strips are referred to as “banding.” The ovals are called “paterae” and their design is a motif from the Connecticut region.
Shellac was the choice finish for this piece, hand-applied in multiple coats by a process called “padding.” Once the shellac cured, it was buffed by hand with steel wool and a shop-made wax was applied.
